Back in 2011, Lamia Bazir and the local women of Adghagh: Khadija, Yamna, Drissia, Naima, Hayat, Achoura, Rabha and Aicha had a dream of building a community center that would improve the health, sanitation, economic, social and cultural conditions of the village of Adghagh in the Middle Atlas Mountains of Morocco.
This dream has transformed into a reality thanks to their participatory approach, persistence, hard work and passion, as well as the partners that have believed in the power women’s empowerment.
Today, the eco friendly multiservice centre is completely built and equipped, it includes a women learning center, a health care center, a solar powered public bathhouse (Hammam), an administrative office, and an artifact and Carpet making center. This project is lead by the local women, includes the youth of the village and will benefit more than 1500 people in the surrounding douars of the region. The center was built in alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals and the spirit of both sustainable Development and Gender Equality.
This project aimes to demonstrate that women have an unlimited power and are key change makers in their communities. It is also an inspiring story of friendship and solidarity between an urban young student and local rural women who started it as a dream and who were able, despite the doubts, the pressure, the initial limited ressources, the hardship, the ups and downs, the hopes and the dashes, to turn it into reality and show that anything they envision can be done !
